Social Widgets

Integrating the social web with your website is becoming more and more mainstream on modern web 2.0 sites.

We’ve put together a list of some of the popular social widgets and API’s available to use from some of the big players in the social web world.

Facebook is gaining popularity from a business perspective now as it allows you to separate your personal profile from a business page. Not only that, but their creative developers have come up with a couple of widgets you can install on your pages or even on your own website to promote your page further!

“Fan Box” is a fantastic way to grow the number of fans on your site. It simply adds a “become a fan” button to the top of the page, so visitors can instantly join your community for updates etc.

“Live Stream Box” is another way for facebook users to connect, share and post updates on your business pages.

Finally, “Page Badge” allows you to add a Facebook Badge to your own website to share information with a variety of other users. This can be used on many other sites too and is not restricted to use on your own site!

Twitter has developed a range of widgets available for your website or your iPhone (and other such devices). The web widgets allow you to display your Twitter posts on your other social sites as well such as Facebook and MySpace.

Your Website

You get two widgets for this! One is the “profile widget” which simply displays all the recent activity on your twitter page in a nice smooth animated “tweets” window. All you do to install it is copy and paste the code it provides!

A new one is the “Search Widget” which allows you to search for specific topics being discussed on the twitter community! Great for live events, broadcastings, conferences, TV Shows or just keeping up with the news.

Vimeo is fast becoming the number 1 choice for video creation and hosting, and has two account types. The Basic account allows you to upload 500mb per week and a few options for your videos, whilst the Plus account gives you everything you need and more to create the best videos you can. However, its not a commercial based site, so TV ads for your product are a no-go here. But creative works, maybe even experiments for things, are. You can add them to your website too...

Vimeo uses an API to request content, and offers output in JSON, PHP and XML formats. Visit the Vimeo API page for more information.

FlickR is a Yahoo owned website allowing you to upload your photos and the like, join communities and check out everyone else’s photos too!

Yahoo have since created a number of widgets for use on your own computer, and an API to boot. There is also a number of website widgets you can use to install Flickr feeds onto your own site!!
